                                                Social Expectations and Responsibilities

Do certain professions have an obligation to be more socially responsible than others? Do some professions require people to be more selfish and focused on their individual desires? Every job has a different obligation to society. Some jobs require people to be responsible while others promote selfishness and individuality. People in the military, FBI, CIA and other agencies/departments like these are held to a higher responsibility level. For example if a member of one of these agencies were to do drugs, underage drink, commit a crime or any other felony, they are likely to be fired. If they committed a felony they are also unlikely to get the job in the first place. Organizations like these also carry a high level of pride so they try to appear and act as socially responsibly as possible. An example of this is how military members wear their uniforms with precision and pride. A worker at McDonalds is less likely to be fired for being caught under age drinking. Also McDonald’s employees generally tend not to care about their uniforms especially in comparison to those in the armed services.
Some occupations allow people to be very selfish and often irresponsible. An example of this type of job would be an NFL or NBA player. Major league athletes can choose to be selfish and even irresponsible without facing repercussions. Other people that would fall into this category would be musicians, actors, actresses and jobs similar to these. A recent example of this would be Miley Cyrus’s dance routines and comments to the media. It’s safe to say that her actions are provocative and questionably socially irresponsible.

I like this sentence because it shows us the importance of being in the military and the pride and dedication it takes to be in it. This statement can also be contradicted because some people might take pride in wearing the McDonalds uniform because it is the leading fast food restaurant in the world so many people will rely on them for food.

Why are you less likely to get fired from McDonalds if you get caught breaking the law then if you’re say in the military? Can’t you get kicked out of the army for say smoking marijuana?

How are NFL players and NBA players not getting into trouble for being selfish and often irresponsible? Just last week a NFL coach got fined 100,000 dollars for stepping on the field though he barely interfered in the play. The commissioner is actually cracking up on NFL investigations and players are getting more suspensions.

I feel like I was very interested in the point where you said it takes a lot of pride to wear the Military uniform and I can relate because at football practice my coaches always talk about how it is an honor to wear the “M” and it really is an amazing feeling.

  2. The most interesting sentence in this blog is “Organizations like these also carry a high level of pride so they try to appear and act as socially responsibly as possible.” I believe this is interesting because I believe that all organizations need to follow a high level of pride, for example McDonalds as you stated, they may not seem like the best and fanciest place to eat. But they do have a lot of things to be proud of like they are one of the oldest fast food restaurants; they have the biggest fast food restaurant franchise in the world, etc. So I believe that just about all organizations need to hold a high profile.

Why do you feel so strongly about only the bigger and fancier organizations?
Do you believe that the military is the only organization that holds this high level of pride and why?

I would be most interested in reading about certain cases on which these famous people are selfish and also in certain cases where these organizations can be considered selfish as well.
